Part 3

It's already the 4th time you snoozed your alarm. It's 7:24 am, your regular time of waking up. You woke up last night around 2 for no reason, or probably the jetlag, then failed to sleep until 3:30am.

You yawned sleepily, stretching on the bed. Gahan nowhere to be seen. With one final stretch you got up and bent your body backwards and sighed when your spine cracked a little.

"I could really use a massage," you moaned, remembering the shoulder ache yesterday while driving your motorcycle.

You prepared your breakfast first by heating water for your tea, toasted a couple of honey oat bread slowly so by the time you're done with your shower they'll be done as well. You didn't forget to take out the bag of dried cherries for Gahan.

Humming to yourself you entered the shower and enjoyed the cold water, the smell of your strawberry shampoo, and the vanilla soap Roger had you use since you were little.

After that, you just wrapped a towel around your hair and torso and went to the kitchen to eat.

Your shinigami reappeared from outside; Gahan looked like a broken doll with stitches from her forehead to her torso. Her ribcage were sprawled open like an umbrella upside down, white and black cloth covering her body.

"You like strolling around when I'm asleep," you told her, waving the bag of cherries.

"Sunrise looks different here, I like seeing it." Gahan replied, making her way to you and grabbed the bag, eating cherries by twos.

When you finished your peaceful breakfast, Carter emailed you some tasks. He asked if you could shadow Takada in the afternoon, attaching a map in the process. Apparently Takada frequented this particular restaurant during lunch hours.

"Say Gahan, will you still stay by my side even if I let someone else use my notebook?" you asked.

"Yes. It's the rule."

"If I were to kiss someone then, are you just going to stand where you can see me?" you tried not to smile, but she snickered.

"Of course I won't watch you. Humans have a weird position when reproducing."

You laughed a little and, for some reason, you suddenly remembered the first time you met Matt at the orphanage.

He was sitting under the tree with a gadget glued to his hands, then Mello threw a ball at him. He didn't do anything, just focused on his game. You came up to him then but he didn't mind you at all.

"Hey Mina!" Mello shouted. "He won't talk to you so don't bother!" he added, he went on and continued playing with other kids.

You watched Mello run around, then went back to Matt. He's the boy who refused to talk and eat with anyone,) so you wanted to befriend him instead. Since you and Mello are close, the other kids didn't want to get near you because the last time someone made you cry, Mello beat the hell out of them.

"Hello." he said. He spoke! Stopping you from thinking.

"Hi, everyone calls me Mina." You replied, sitting next to him.

"I'm Mail, but they call me Matt." He said, pausing his game to look at you.

"Oh, then my name is (y/n). What are you playing?" You asked, peeking at his gadget where you saw a stack of shapes in different colors.

"It's Tetris, Roger said if I finished level 50 he'll give me a reward." Matt replied, then continued his game.

After that you couldn't remember the reward he talked about. It's one of the few encounters with Matt, you had a habit of glancing at him whenever he's around, then he'll look back at you for some reason, so then you'll look away. It's been like that ever since.

Reality pulled you back again when your phone rang, it's Gevanni.

"Yes Gevanni?"

"This is Near, dear (y/n)." He snickered.

You smiled a little. "Is there something wrong? You're calling me by my name."

"Nothing's wrong, I just wanted to know if you're alright. You just moved here in Asia."

It's like Near to care, after all you're friends.

"Thanks for asking, dear Nate, I'm getting ready for this afternoon. I'll come by later to report."

He giggled, "Should you see dear Mello, please tell him I said hi."

Of the four of you, you're the only one who knows everyone's names, you were sure the rivalry between Near and Mello hindered them from exchanging such information.

"Okay. Okay Near. See you later."

Then the call ended.

You got up finally then went to your closet room, pulling out a black fitted sleeveless top and an ankle cut jeans. You tried looking as normal as possible for the morning, blending in with the current clothing trends of being a "Minimal Chic".

"Guess it'll do for now," you said, putting on a light makeup next.

Before going to the restaurant you went to the mall first to buy a maroon slim fitted dress to wear for the hour. After studying the restaurant, apparently it's a 5-starred place, consumers can only dine upon reservation. Thanks to your credentials you made it inside without a problem.

After parking your motorcycle, you went to the restroom at the lobby to change; cursing at yourself during the process because you should've just hailed a cab on the way there so you didn't have to carry your dress.

"For Hayashi." you smiled at the receptionist who stared at your face, blushing at the process.

He escorted you to your seat diligently then offered you the menu. It's 11:45am, Takada should be here in 15 minutes.

You faked not seeing the menu properly so you can wear your fake glasses, it's nothing techy, but it helps cover your eyes when you look around.

The table in front of you was suddenly occupied by a man in a screaming suit. Although it wasn't flashy, it's just that no one in the daytime would wear a black coat. Or so you thought.

It's Matt.  He's wearing formal clothes, his goggles are gone, and his hair was neatly swept upwards. You can totally see his full face; eyes ocean blue and his lips a bit pink.

Did he bite his lip? He looks gorgeous. What's he doing here?

"Oh Matt's here. Though I don't think he's following you." Gahan commented.

"So we're probably doing the same thing." You whispered. You can't take your eyes off of him, he looked so different without his hair and goggles covering his face, and without a cigarette. Just like before you'll look at him, he'll look back at you, so you'd look away.

The waiter came without you calling and asked if you were ready to order, you were annoyed because you'd rather look at Matt, but you gave him your sweetest smile as you ordered.

Your phone suddenly vibrated, signalling that they've arrived. Takada came in with Halle, but they sat on different tables. After scanning the area you focused on Takada since it's your first time seeing her, and to your surprise, she doesn't have her lifespan displayed. It was a very good thing that she sat opposite to you, just a table away from Matt's, where you can see her face even at a side view.

I doubt Near knows about this. He might've suspected her, but at least he knows now.

You looked for Matt and saw that he's looking at Takada as well, then checked his phone, then he scanned the room until his eyes met yours. Then smirked.

He fucking smirked! It looks good on him I-

"Sorry for making you wait Madam," the waiter interrupted your thoughts. He slid the plate of Shrimp Puttanesca and neatly poured your glass with strawberry sparkling.

"Matt has a strange power of making you panic." Gahan snickered. You ignored her, your fast heartbeat, and the heat forming on your face.

You ate your food quietly, watching Takada from time to time. She barely touched her plate because she can't take her eyes off her phone, and it looked like she's writing something down on a small memo pad. You can't see it quite clearly because her writing hand is in the opposite direction, as to Matt, he can see her perfectly.

After finishing the last shrimp, out five, you decided to leave at that. Her next rendezvous is at hotel later at 6pm, and but it's only 1:32pm.

Matt had already left before you, so you called the waiter to finally pay your bill.

When you got to the parking, Matt's car was parked beside yours. He sat inside with windows open, a cigarette stuck between his lips.

"Hey," He said, getting out of the car. His hair is slightly wet, brushed downwards, even his goggles are back.

"I knew there's something about you without goggles." You smiled at him, walking towards your motorcycle.

"More coverage, I could be killed anytime." He replied, placing his hands in his pockets.

"You had those way before Matt," you said, taking out your black pants."Why were you following me last night?"

"Installing bugs, Mello wanted to know your routine."

"He could've done it himself right? I can imagine the hassle it caused you." You snorted.

"Didn't think I wanted to see you? You're my first girl friend." You paused, your heart skipped. Mello warned you that Matt is weird and ladies look at him. "You know, girl and friend." He clarified, clearing his throat.

You laughed instead and unzipped the side of your dress just a few inches below your waist.

"You gonna keep watching me or you gonna turn around?" You showed him your pants.

He continued smoking, watching you. "There's a restroom there, why not just change inside?"

"Hassle. Please turn around." You almost ordered. He let out a small chuckle then turned around, when he did, you faced your motorcycle and raised your left leg and wore your pants carefully. Good thing you brought a comfortable one.

"You know," he started, you heard him turn around but you ignored him.

He's watching me dress this pervert--!

"It's a good thing your hair covers your nape." He said

You buttoned your pants finally, "Why? You have a certain liking to napes?"

He was quiet for a moment, "Because you left the price tag on."

You wanted to kill him, the yourself next.

Your stomach finally dropped and you could only lower your head. "That must be why the waiter kept smiling at me! I am done." You covered your face, biting your lip in embarrassment.

"I kept an eye on you, don't worry. I doubt anyone noticed." He smiled as well, obviously stifling a laugh. You pouted, facing him.

"Let me," he walked towards you. He turned you slowly then placed a hand on your shoulder, the other brushing your hair to the side. When he saw the tag he pulled it off quickly with a snap. His warm hand lingered on your nape for a moment, but removed it when you noticed.

"Thanks." You're certain that your face is already red, so you decided to just get on with changing so you can never see him ever again.

"You haven't changed Mina."

"I don't think any of us has," You pointed at his eyes, "Those goggles never left your face."

He smiled for a bit then pulled a small box wrapped in blue paper from his coat pocket. "Mello wanted to give you this. He's really cautious about being seen with you." Of course, after the wise decision of calling Light without synchronizing your voice made things a bit difficult for you to see Mello.

"Were you already identified?"

"Not yet. Hopefully."

"If you're going to shadow Takada tonight, we could watch over together, I mean, I have something you don't." you said.

"What do you do exactly?" he asked.

"I work with Near, but I also have a fake FBI badge. I'm working as an 'undercover journalist'."

"And Takada is?" The s lingered in his question.

"We can't talk about this here, meet me at my apartment?" You grabbed your jacket next. He nodded and threw his cigarette at the pot.

You wore your helmet then started your engine, you wanted to wait for him but you remembered that you allotted a few minutes in your schedule to do a quick laundry so you left first, him following subtly.

(Time skip;  4:36pm)

"Here, good thing I shopped yesterday." You handed him a box of Earl Gray, saying that he should compensate for all the soda he's drank. "Being healthy doesn't really work like that though."

"Thanks, I haven't had tea since, probably last year when we decided take-outs are the way to go." You frowned at that, "You have to tell Mello to stop eating those chocolates everyday-- it's especially annoying when he turn those foils into little balls and flicks them everywhere."

You furrowed your brows at him, "What-- are you guys trying to have a race on who dies first? Your chips are worse even!"

He can only put his hands up with a sly smile

"We should go, she might arrive earlier." you checked the wall clock and it just passed 4:45pm. Halle keeps you updated from time to time, but you'd rather not rely on her fully.

“Yeah okay.” He said, standing up. "I'll warm up the car."

You fixed the table first before changing your clothes, one thing you hate is a messy room; especially food scattered around. You can only imagine the discomfort when you discover what disaster Mello and Matt has as a house based on his stories.

Seeing the tub made you want to take a quick rinse but you'd didn't want Matt to wait, so you just gingerly wiped your arms with a wet towel, you peeled your dress off neatly then washed your face, then combed your hair with a wet brush next to freshen your scalp.

After brushing your teeth, you closed the lights in your bathroom and closed the door, you thought you saw a figure on your couch but you're alone-- as far as you know.

"Should I be concerned that you don't pay attention to your surroundings?" Matt inquired.

"I thought you went down!" You squeaked, then hopped to your bedroom.

"Maybe I should tell Mello how unfit you are for the case," you can hear the smile in his voice. You shut the door on him and locked the door. "He'd probably threaten Near just to pull you out from the team."

You groaned at the idea, "Gahan?" you called, looking at the ceiling but she reappeared from the living room.

"You have a bad habit of not telling me that Matt or Mello are inside my apartment."

"Having them around makes you happy." she answered.

"Yes! But they have a really, really bad timing! Mello saw me shirtless, Matt just saw me only in my underwear." you complained, heart beating fast.

"I didn't mean that." Matt said through the door but you ignored him.

It's not that you don't pay attention, heck you were ranked 4th as the wisest 9 year old in the orphanage, just below Matt, but Gahan is right about Matt having an effect on you when he's around-- it's like being normal for a whole minute, domestic and normal.

When you finally got dressed, Matt was waiting for you like an innocent puppy on your couch, PSP, but shut off, in his hand

(Time skip; 7:39pm)

An hour has passed since Takada went in the hotel, Halle texted you that she doesn't know what time Light and Takada's meeting will finish, so you just waited outside patiently.

“This is what I do most of the time.” Matt broke the deafening silence. You sighed in response, then checked your phone for any updates.

“Have you tried installing cameras in there?” you asked.

“I did, but somehow someone was able to pinpoint all the cameras and mics I planted; it was as if someone had a blueprint of my actions. Pretty sneaky.” He pulled out a cigarette but you glared at him, making him put it back.

Awkward silence again, except for the tapping of your phone.

“Are you playing?”

“Checking my emails.”

“Oh,” he paused. “You remember the time Mello snapped your pencil then you cried?”

You thought of it deeply, of course, how could you forget?

You were only six when you broke into sobs when Mello threw the colored pencil on the floor, breaking it in half. Roger came in quick when the other kids started making a fuss.

“I didn’t mean to!” he shouted in defense. L gave you a pencil set specifically for your 'Little Investigation Doodles'.

“What did you do this time, Mello? All you do is make the other kids cry.” Roger knelt down in front of you to wipe your tears.

“I didn’t mean to, she was so great at it so I tried copying her, but I wasn't good so I got mad then I sort of broke the pencil.” he said, voice trembling. After Roger had calmed you you saw Mello trembling with tears forming in his eyes. Instead of being angry you wanted to hug him instead for making him cry.

You smiled at the silly memory. “Yeah, I do. After that I just stuck beside him and he never pushed me away.”

“He watches you everyday, whenever he can.” He said coolly. “I almost thought he had this weird obsession over you but after I found out he'd been installing trackers on my clothes, even here on my car, I figured he just cared a lot."

Mello does that?

“I wish I could talk to him properly, I haven't had the time to properly catch up with him." You sighed, closing your phone, then pulled your legs up to hug your knees. "It's already been a week since I last saw him, didn't even leave his phone number."

“He's working on something Mina, but I'll tell him that.” He replied, pulling his window up.

You were so confused. You loved Mello like a brother, but when he left for five years it's as if a part of you have died along with your affection for him. Meeting Matt now has made you feel things you didn't know you could-- especially when he's with you, because you never knew this chatty, playful side of him and it kept surprising you.

“I missed both of you.” You said, almost to yourself. You just blankly watched people come in and out of the hotel.

Matt didn’t say anything after that, but he tapped your arm.

Butterflies in your stomach-- one of the things you feel when he touches you.

He pointed at the lobby entrance. Takada came into view, then Yagami Light waved at her before she got in a white van. When the van passed you noticed something about Light that you missed all this time.

He has no life span displayed.

You smiled, very amused. “What a guy, going to public like that,” you said.

“Why?” Matt asked, looking at the same direction as you are.

“There’s Kira.” You said, bringing your feet down.

“We're pretty much convinced that he is.” He said.

“No, he is, he doesn’t have his lifespan displayed. Is he stupid or something?” you replied. One thing's for sure is that now you can't make physical contact with Light or Takeda; one of them could have the eyes.

Matt chuckled, waiting for Light to come back inside the hotel before starting the car.

“Come on, mission accomplished.”

You asked Matt to drop you off Near's suite first so you can report to him, then got home by taking the latest train. You showered as fast as you could just to get that 8 hours of sleep. Without deciding much you just pulled any underwear you can and a large hoodie to sleep in. It's already 11:45pm, you plopped down lazily and closed you eyes, letting sleep consume you.

"Cover your legs goddammit!" A rude and familiar voice woke you. At his tone you didn't bother that he once again infiltrated your home. You checked the clock on your bedside table with one eye, 3:11am, then groaned.

He threw a blanket on your legs, "Seriously Mina, what if someone broke in and saw you like this? You don't even have a gun near you!" He barked, but you ignored him. Instead you faced him but still had your eyes close, just following his voice.

You patted the space beside you, "Lay." You softly groaned.

"Open your eyes when I talk to you." He countered.

"Jesus Mello it's 3 in the morning! Lay down and talk to me nicely," you opened your eyes angrily.

He angrily removed his red jacket and boots then laid beside you, facing the ceiling. He sighed deeply as if to remove all the tension and anger he'd been holding.

You moved towards him instead and placed a hand on his chest, right where you can feel his beating heart.

"It's been 9 years since you last slept beside me." You closed your eyes again, murmuring, sleep threatening to consume you once again.

"Kids thought differently," he replied.

"Onii-san," you said.

"What?"

"It means older brother in Japanese. I learned the language on the plane ride here." You yawned, moving closer to him.

"You still thought of me that way?"

"Of course, didn't change even after you left me." You opened your eyes to look, and saw him look at you. It's the first time you noticed his scar fully; it went from his face down to his collarbone. You brought your fingers to tap on the skin, but he stopped when you reached his cheek.

"Do you think differently of me now?" You asked, sadness starting to loom in your chest. He's really being distant.

"No, I just," he paused, looking away, releasing your wrist. "I don't understand how you stuck by my side."

"It's called loyalty."

"Mina I've done terrible things, I've killed people. How can you ignore that?"

"How can that change the way I see you? A murderer can still be a good brother."

Mello scoffed, covering his eyes. "You just called me a murderer."

"In general," you corrected. "My point is, you shouldn't think deeply of this, I'll be here for you Mello, no matter what happens."

You sat and pulled his chin toward your direction, you looked at him with knowing eyes, the one people always fall for,

He blinked cautiously then pulled your hand from his face, not letting go this time around. "You're doing that to me? You think that'll work?" his lips twitch in amusement.

"It did once, look where it got us." You giggled, poking him playfully.

"I guess you can lay beside me," he said.

"Of course, in my bed and all, right?" you kept teasing him. Somehow you can see a pink flush on his skin before he covered his face and pretended to sleep.

You broke into a winning smile then laid back comfortably, resting your head above his outstretched arm.

"Goodnight Mello." you sighed, his hand gently caressing your hair to lull you back to sleep.
